Standard Beginning Course for all levels.
Students are taught the fundamentals of drawing by learning classical lighting and shading techniques. Working
with age based mediums of pencil or charcoal, students learn about value, proportion and compositional balance. After a series of monochromatic exercises, students learn to work with color using soft pastel. Typical first works include still life and landscape.
Students who become proficient in the pastel medium may begin oil painting. The approach to oils is much the same as pastels.
Because instruction is individual within the class, each student works at his/her own pace and comfort level. Students can continue to advance individually from term to term.
The curriculum can be specially tailored for students who need to complete portfolios for magnet schools and colleges. Students looking to apply to Magnet Art Programs should sign up one year prior to application for best results.
BASIC DRAWING IN BLACK & WHITE
Students will learn basic fundamentals of shading, perspective, and composition by working with a variety of materials including charcoal and pencil. No experience necessary, great for pure beginners. Continuing students can move into the soft pastel curriculum if desired or remain in black and white to continue on to more complex projects.
